A delightful and comforting Italian-American pasta bake that marries al dente penne with hearty marinara, molten fresh mozzarella, and a bright finish of fresh basil and balsamic reduction. This one-pan meal is perfect for a busy weeknight, prioritizing the structural integrity of the pasta and the creamy excellence of fresh, high-moisture mozzarella. It is a harmonious balance of sweet, acidic, and savory flavors that delivers restaurant-quality results with minimal prep time.

Ingredients

Scale

8 oz (225g) Penne or Fusilli pasta
1 cup (240ml) High-quality marinara sauce
4 oz (115g) Fresh mozzarella pearls, drained
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, hand-torn
1 tbsp (15ml) Balsamic glaze

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the pasta for two minutes less than the package instructions indicate for al dente.
Drain the pasta and toss it in a baking dish with the marinara sauce.
Scatter the drained mozzarella pearls evenly over the top of the pasta mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until the cheese is browned and bubbling.
Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh torn basil, and drizzle with balsamic glaze before serving.

Notes

Ensure the mozzarella pearls are drained thoroughly to prevent the dish from becoming watery. The balsamic glaze is essential for cutting through the richness of the cheese. Do not add the basil before baking, as the high heat will destroy its bright flavor and turn it bitter.
